La Luz

La Luz

Surf rock band from Seattle

Formed in 2012 by Shana Cleveland who used to work with the Curious Mystery and Shana Cleveland & the Sandcastles. Cleveland joined forces with Alice Sandahl, Abbey Blackwell and Marian Li-Pino to arrive at a simpler, cheerful, yet potent sound. They named themselves ‘La Luz’, which stands for ‘the light’ in Spanish and immediately entered the studio. In 2013, they released EPs with one of the hippest record labels in the USA, Suicide Squeeze and Mississippi Records, and joined the Hardly Art family. Their debut album ‘Alive’ came out with the Hardly Art label. As a result of a serious car accident they had on their way back from a concert that was a part of the album tour, their RV and equipment got severely damaged, resulting in their cancellation of the tour with Of Montreal, and Blackwell quitting the band. They could only begin working for their second album in 2015, when Lena Simon joined the band as the new bassist. Produced, mixed and mastered by Ty Segall, the album was completely recorded in a surfboard shop. Following their tour in support of the album, they released the third LP, ‘Floating Features’, produced by yet another key producer Dan Auerbach, who is also the guitarist of The Black Keys. Their popularity is on the rise, thanks to their musical style that combines surf rock, doo-wop and psychedelic tunes and reaches as far as ‘crowd surfing’.
