Umut Adan

Umut Adan

Umut Adan’s sound is so familiar that it is hard to believe it is contemporary at first. He is guided by the psych-pop of the 70’s and its political joyfulness, irony and optimism. Definitely a discovery of the year!

Having caused the astonishment of ‘Anatolian rock lives!’ in Pop Matters and achieved international acclaim with ‘Bahar’ that is declared best album of the year by Magnet Magazine, Umut Adan was born and raised in Istanbul. He fell under the spell of Turkish folk music and Anatolian Pop of the 70s at a young age. After settling in Italy, he began composing his own songs. He produced his first singles with the psych-pop genius Marco Fasolo. He was the opening act of Jack White’s Istanbul concert. Recorded in London, his first album ‘Bahar’ comprises folk-inspired songs, plenty of fuzz guitar and funk riffs, and enigmatic arrangements of classics such as Fikret Kızılok’s ‘Zaman Zaman’. A contributor to the record was Liam Watson, known for his work from Killlers to White Stripes. The album seems to make a name for itself with its audacious narrative that touches on Turkey’s contradictions and tensions.

In this final concert of Umut Adan’s European tour, we follow in the footsteps of Umut to live and keep alive the passionate, proud and optimistic political culture of the 70s.
